Project
Aquaculture Living Breakwater for Coastal Protection and Sea Decarbonization.
The project was carried out in 6 Activities (ATI):
ATI1: Contextualizing the theme of Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) in the context of coastal resilience
- Survey of examples of SBN with a focus on wave energy attenuation objectives and biodiversity promotion, linked to macroalgae ecosystems.
- Analysis of the current state of materials that could be used for this type of structure, with a focus on materials of sustainable origin and with a reduced impact on the environment.
ATI2: Physical modeling of the potential for wave energy reduction by macroalgae fields in line culture - The tests took place in the wave channel of FEUP's experimental facilities.
- Tests for different macroalgae cultivation surface dimensions, for different agitation conditions.
- Tests of the impact of SBN on the reduction of overtopping of coastal structures, through the inclusion of a breakwater in the experimental channel.
ATI3: Numerical modeling of the potential for wave energy reduction by macroalgae fields in line culture and sizing of the AQUABREAK solution
- Reproduction of the test conditions applied in the physical model, using the SWASH numerical model.
- Calculation of the forces acting on the structure with the Open Foam model.
- Dimensioning the structure, focusing on its robustness, with the Ansys model.
ATI4: Optimizing structure and final design
- Selection of the final design of the structure, taking into account exposure to high energy conditions and all the results previously ascertained during the previous stages.
ATI5: Communication and outreach
- Carrying out actions to publicize the project, including establishing contact with stakeholders.
ATI6: Project development management activities
- Periodic meetings between partners throughout the project to report on and monitor activities related to its development and management.
